A CHOICE EXPERIMENT MODEL FOR BEEF ATTRIBUTES: WHAT CONSUMER PREFERENCES TELL US AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Umberger, Wendy J..
This paper reports the main findings obtained from a U.S. consumer choice experiment regarding perceptions of food safety and meat attributes, and to the extent to which these attitudes translate into willingness-to-pay (WTP) for labeled ribeye steaks. The results indicate that USDA food safety inspection labels, labels indicating that the steak is tender, or the ability to trace back the animal to the farm are more important to consumers than country of origin labeling.

A RISK PERCEPTION ANALYSIS OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS BASED ON STATED PREFERENCES AgEcon
Bugbee, Marcia; Loureiro, Maria L..
Most of the existing literature deals with consumer willingness to pay for GM-free food, or consumer willingness to accept for GM food. However, it is well know that consumers have mixed views about GM foods. In this research, we do not presume that all consumers may just have positive or negative preferences about GM products. Rather, heterogeneous preferences are considered. This paper presents a contingent valuation questioning sequence and associated modeling approaches that allow identification of both positive and negative preferences. Willingness to pay (WTP) for the GM product is contrasted with willingness to accept (WTA) compensation to buy it.

An Empirical Analysis of Market Integration and Efficiency for U.S. Fresh Tomato Markets AgEcon
Padilla-Bernal, Luz E.; Thilmany, Dawn D.; Loureiro, Maria L..
Fresh tomato trade between the United States and Mexico grew significantly during the 1990s. Moreover, major structural changes in U.S. produce marketing channels increase the complexity of conducting analyses to delineate the impact of liberalized trade. Following the work of Barrett, Li, and Bailey, this study implements a mixed distribution to examine spatial-price relationships between major shipping points and terminal markets for Mexican imported, and Florida and California tomatoes. Although markets are often efficiently integrated, results suggest strategic pricing and product shipments may exist and vary among terminal markets in Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago.

ANALYZING FARM PARTICIPATION DECISIONS IN AGROTOURISM ACTIVITIES IN NORWAY: SOME WELFARE IMPLICATIONS AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Jervell-Moxnes, Anne.
The aim of this paper is to assess the role played by socio-demographic factors, the financial situation of the farm household, as well as the productive orientation and physical location of the farm on the adoption of agro-tourism activities in Norway. Agro-tourism activities in Norway can be classified mainly into two groups: a) renting of fishing and hunting rights, and b) renting of rooms on the farm, huts, cabin, and provision or direct sell of food to travelers. Results indicate that factors such as the size and the location (rural or semi-rural) of the farm play a statistically significant and more important role on the decision of renting fishing and hunting rights than on the development of other agro-tourism activities on the farm. On the...

Aproximacion a las perdidas economicas ocasionadas a corto plazo por los incendios forestales en Galicia en 2006 AgEcon
Barrio, Melina; Loureiro, Maria L.; Chas, Maria Luisa.
ABSTRACT This study quantifies part of the short-term or immediate economic losses (excluding the non-use or pasive losses) caused by the wildfires in Galicia during 2006. The background of the empirical work is...

Assessing Consumer Preferences for Country-of-Origin Labeling AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Umberger, Wendy J..
In this paper, we assess consumer willingness to pay for a mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) program applied to beef ribeye steaks, chicken breasts, and pork chops, all labeled as “Certified U.S.” products. A consumer survey was mailed in spring and early summer 2003 to households in the continental United States. Results indicate that consumers are in general very concerned about food safety issues, viewing U.S. meats as the safest among the selection of countries considered. Nevertheless, consumer willingness to pay for Certified U.S. products is relatively small, although above the expected implementation costs associated with a mandatory labeling program. This finding coincides with the fact that only 36% of the sample favored consumers...

ASSESSING CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR ORGANIC, ECO-LABELED, AND REGULAR APPLES AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; McCluskey, Jill J.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
We assess consumer choice of eco-labeled, organic, and regular apples, and identify sociodemographic characteristics affecting the choice among those three alternatives. Eco-labeled apples are less desirable than organic when food safety, the environment, and children's needs are considered. Characteristics that may be expected to positively affect the decision to buy eco-labeled apples relative to regular apples actually have the opposite effect with the inclusion of the organic alternative. When considering all three choices, the eco-labeled product is found to be an intermediate choice among consumers.

Assessing the Impact of Biodiversity on Tourism Flows: A model for Tourist Behaviour and its Policy Implications AgEcon
Macagno, Giulia; Loureiro, Maria L.; Nunes, Paulo A.L.D.; Tol, Richard S.J..
This analysis provides an example of how biodiversity can be measured by means of different indicators, and how the latter can be used to assess the influence of the biodiversity profile of a region on the tourism flows towards it. Previous studies have considered environmental amenities as one of the determinants of tourism destination choice. The central hypothesis of this paper is that the destination’s biodiversity profile can be considered as a key component of environmental amenities. The main objective of this study is to propose a different perspective on this topic, considering the role of biodiversity on tourists’ choice of destination and duration of stay. Domestic Irish tourist flows have been chosen as a case study. The first step of the...

CONSUMER ATTITUDES TOWARDS GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS IN NORWAY AgEcon
Grimsrud, Kristine M.; McCluskey, Jill J.; Loureiro, Maria L.; Wahl, Thomas I..
There is a lack of public acceptance of genetically modified (GM) food products in Europe. Using a dichotomous choice contingent valuation methodology, we find that willingness to accept (WTA) for GM food in Norway is positively affected (i.e. a greater discount is required) by higher levels of self-reported risk perceptions toward GM-food and preferences for domestically produced food. The estimation results show that self-reported knowledge about biotechnology increases WTA while higher levels of formal education decrease the WTA for GM-foods. Also, respondents who have a high level of concern about food safety have a higher WTA for GM food. Further, we estimate mean willingness to accept for GM food products. Our results indicate that our sample on...

CONSUMER PREFERENCES AND WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR FOOD LABELING: A DISCUSSION OF EMPIRICAL STUDIES AgEcon
McCluskey, Jill J.; Loureiro, Maria L..
We discuss empirical research on consumer preferences and willingness to pay for several types of food quality or attribute labeling. The selected categories we include are eco-labels, GM food labels, U.S. state agricultural-product labels and European Protected Geographical Indication labels, BSE-tested-beef labels, and “"Fair Trade”" labels. We discuss generalizations that can be drawn from the studies as a group. Most importantly, we find that consumers must perceive high quality in order for the food product to command a premium. Furthermore, the perception of quality may sometimes differ across consumers.

CONSUMER RESPONSE TO COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELING PROGRAM IN THE CONTEXT OF HETEROGENOUS PREFERENCES AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Umberger, Wendy J..
Consumer willingness to pay for a mandatory country-of-origin labeling program is assessed. A consumer survey was conducted during 2002 in several grocery stores in Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins, Colorado. Econometric results indicate that surveyed consumers are willing to pay an average of $184 per household annually for a mandatory country-of-origin labeling program. Respondents were also willing to pay an average of $1.53 and $0.70 per pound more for steak and hamburger labeled as "U.S. Certified Steak" and "U.S. Certified Hamburger," which is equivalent to a 38% and 58%, respectively, over the initial given price.

Dealing with Preference Uncertainty: A Mixture Model Approach AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Loomis, John B..
In the current paper, we compare alternative approaches to incorporating uncertainty into the statistical analysis of dichotomous choice responses. In doing so, first we employ previous modelling techniques that included uncertainty of preferences, and secondly we compare the obtained results with those coming from a novel approach here developed, a finite mixture model. The finite mixture model is a very flexible framework used to deal with preference uncertainty. Our case study uses data gathered in the Prestige oil spill valuation study from Spain.

ESTIMATING CONSUMER WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR COUNTRY OF-ORIGIN-LABELS FOR BEEF PRODUCTS AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Umberger, Wendy J..
Country-of-origin labeling is now being considered as an alternative by the U.S. Senate. Research is still needed to determine what attributes consumers value in domestic versus imported beef, and to quantify the value that consumers place on country-of-origin labels. Preliminary results suggest that U.S. consumers perceived domestic beef as being safer than imported beef, and overall they are willing to pay a premium to obtain U.S. certified beef.

INTERVIEWER EFFECTS ON THE VALUATION OF GOODS WITH ETHICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ATTRIBUTES AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Lotade-Manje, Justus.
This paper investigates the impact of interviewer effects on willingness to pay (WTP) estimates. Face-to-face surveys were conducted with two interviewers. Both interviewers used a transcript and conducted the survey at the same location and at same time. We found that responses to the WTP questions differ across eco-labeled products and by interviewer. This interviewer effect is particularly relevant when we analyze the impact on WTP estimates for eco-labeled products grown in countries associated with the origin of one of the interviewers.

LOCAL COOPERATIVES' EVALUATION OF BUSINESS INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES AgEcon
Hine, Susan E.; Fulton, Joan R.; Loureiro, Maria L.; Vandeburg, Jennifer M.; McNamara, Kevin T..
Agricultural cooperatives have been restructuring, by way of mergers, acquisitions, joint-ventures, and strategic alliances, to increase efficiencies to remain competitive in a changing business environment. The research evaluating the reorganization of cooperatives has revealed that less than one-half of the restructured businesses are financially successful. There is the potential to significantly influence the future health of the cooperative business sector if, first, insights can be gained concerning the factors being considered by cooperative managers when making restructuring decisions and, second, extension education programs can be adapted to meet the greatest need. In this study we examine: (a) what methods of valuation cooperatives are using...
